MINDFUL IN DAILY LIFE – THE HOW-TO CHAPTER
Have you ever driven all the way home from work, pulled into the driveway and then realized you don’t remember the drive at all?
Scary isn’t it?
That would be the complete opposite of Mindfulness.
You were in one place – your car, doing one thing – driving home. But, your thoughts were completely elsewhere. You may have been thinking through a work issue. You may have been pondering a fight you’d had with your significant other; or my personal favorite, you were daydreaming about how different life would be if you won the lottery.
Its terrible to say, but that is how most of our lives are spent. We don’t focus on the present and we miss the joy and peace we could have. Being present is the only time we can truly experience happiness, appreciate beauty, and enjoy gratitude. Those moments are what makes life good. For that reason, being present and Mindful is something we need to become better at doing.
Logically, that makes all the sense in the world. Of course we want to be happier, more at peace, appreciating beauty and enjoying gratitude. But, we are normal people, living in this busy world. There are errands to run and lists to get checked off. We spend most of our time thinking about the future and the past, as if by thinking of them we can change them. We need to break that habit of being mentally absent.
Mindfulness isn’t going to suddenly sure this problem. As we’ve seen Yogis in many differing communities have spent all day every day of their adult lives perfecting this practice. Real life just doesn’t allow for that.
However, most folks take time from daily life to exercise. If you have a goal to run a marathon you could just sign up for the marathon, buy some new shoes and snazzy running gear and show up on the big day at the starting line. But you wouldn’t.
You’d start with a short run; you’d run every day whether it rained or snowed. You’d build up your stamina and celebrate each new milestone. Running becomes a habit and almost an automatic action for you. You understand that you weren’t prepared to run twenty-some miles just because you had the right shoes.
The same is true of Mindfulness. You can’t just suddenly be present in ever situation and for every waking moment. You have a lifetime of habits to overcome to do that. And just trying once every third week to be Mindful won’t help anything. It must become automatic. You don’t start out running the marathon. You start out running the mile, or the half-mile, or even walking around the block.
It’s okay to take small steps, even baby steps to accomplish your goal of Mindfulness. We’ve held tightly onto our preoccupation with the past and or future for so long, we will have to overcome that and replace it with a new habit – one of Mindfulness. But it will not happen overnight.
